Preparation · 1

- Set the planned fuel quantity and passenger/cargo stations.
- Check the displayed gross-weight indication for an exceedance warning.
- Confirm the centre-of-gravity marker remains inside the shown limits.
- Remove or configure exterior ground items as appropriate before departure.
Startup · 4
Prepare the common twin-engine airframe, controls, fuel and electrical system before selecting the appropriate start branch.
- Confirm the preflight is complete, control locks are stowed, occupants are secured and cabin doors are latched.
- Set the parking brake; verify emergency gear handle stowed, gear down, flaps up, avionics off and primary engine controls in the normal pre-start positions.
- Centre aileron/rudder trim, set alternate static to normal, verify required breakers in and test the CO detector.
- Select both fuel systems ON, open cowl flaps, switch the beacon on and energise the battery.
- Verify adequate bus voltage, test annunciators, switch both alternators on and check fuel quantity.
- Momentarily exercise each low boost-pump setting and confirm an audible response before returning the pumps off.
Complete the checklist items marked for the pressurised model before engine start.
- Push the cabin-pressurisation shutoff controls to their normal position.
- Keep standby door-seal air off and set the pressurisation mode to dump with door-seal mode off.
Choose the cold, hot/vapour-lock or flooded branch that matches the simulated engine condition; complete the right engine first, then the left.
- Cold branch: prime briefly with mixture rich and throttle fully open, then return the boost pump off and set a small throttle opening before engaging the starter.
- Hot/vapour-lock branch: circulate cool fuel with mixture at cut-off before priming normally; repeat the clearing cycle only if necessary.
- Flooded branch: begin with mixture leaned/cut off and a modest throttle opening, crank while increasing throttle until the engine catches, then stabilise at idle and restore mixture.
- For each engine, stabilise near 1,000–1,200 RPM and confirm oil pressure and expected starter/alternator/low-voltage indications clear.
- Verify bus voltage and keep alternator charging load within the developer checklist expectation before proceeding to the other engine.
Bring avionics, cabin systems and taxi configuration online after successful engine starts.
- Set exterior/cockpit lights as required and leave weather radar off or in standby.
- Switch avionics on and set cabin ventilation/heat/air conditioning as desired.
- Lean mixture for ground operation to reduce plug fouling.
- Release the parking brake when ready and verify braking response as taxi begins.
Taxi / Run-up · 4
Exercise propellers, ignition, instrument-air and alternator systems at the developer run-up setting before departure.
- Set the parking brake, verify annunciators, align the remote compass and return mixture to full-rich for the run-up.
- Bring power to the run-up RPM, exercise each propeller and check the permitted RPM response.
- Check each magneto side for an acceptable RPM drop and confirm instrument-air indications remain normal.
- Switch each alternator off and back on in turn, confirming the expected annunciator and load response.
Briefly test the installed heat/deice systems and confirm their electrical or pressure indications respond before returning them off.
- Test propeller heat and confirm its current draw/cycling response.

- Set mixture for maximum-power operation and verify oil temperature is suitable for takeoff.

The automatic wastegate removes most manual workload, but Black Square warns that cold oil can slow wastegate response near full throttle.

Below critical altitude, the turbocharged Baron does not need continuous mixture reduction simply because altitude is increasing.

- When manifold pressure can no longer be maintained through critical altitude, begin manual mixture management as required.

Cruise · 3
Close cooling drag where appropriate, set cruise power and manage mixture, fuel balance and ice systems for the simulated conditions.
- Close cowl flaps when engine temperatures permit and switch landing lights off.
- Use pitot, windshield, propeller and surface ice protection as conditions require.
- Keep fuel imbalance within the developer checklist limit.
- Lean each engine using the desired rich- or lean-of-peak technique and the EDM-760 as an aid.
- Set propellers and throttle to the applicable cruise schedule for the variant.
- Continue monitoring engine performance and cabin comfort systems.
Reduced throttle or operation above critical altitude can reduce turbocharger output enough to require manual mixture adjustment.

Abort response to an engine failure during the takeoff roll.
